Petrie has developed a system for drying tobacco leaf using Radio Frequency (RF) technology. By using dielectric heating, it is possible to reduce previous drying times of over 48 hours to less than 20 minutes. It is also possible to change from batch to continuous systems reducing the level of handling required.

Petrie RF tobacco dryers use the power and unique capabilities of RF to dry cigars to a constant moisture level, even if the input moisture levels are uneven. This is possible because RF heats material selectively depending on its moisture content.

Another unique property is the expansion of the tobacco leaf inside the cigar. As the water contained within the leaf is heated, this expands the leaf itself and therefore adds bulk to the cigar. This can give a 20% saving in tobacco weight along with a lower tar product.

Petrie tobacco systems can be designed around your production requirements. These can either be stand alone, manual fed machines, or automated systems integrated into a continuous production line.  With the assistance of NIS Ltd Engineering, Petrie’s sister company, an entire turnkey plant can be supplied.

Advantages of the Petrie Tobacco System:

  • Drying times reduced from 48 hours to 20 minutes

  • Unique leaf expansion property increases yield by up to 20%

  • Moisture profiling gives constant output even if product fed in has variable moisture levels

  • Just In Time production capabilities

  • Continuous systems reduce handling

  • Less space needed for drying rooms

Petrie has a pilot system available for trials. These can be done at your facility demonstrating the advantages of the technology in a real time situation.
